About headphones stands

Let’s talk about what the perfect headphones stand should be and what’s the proper position for your headphones on such stand.

Well, first of all, there are headphones that have a pretty wide and soft headband. Yeah, those made of leather with foam inside. If your headphones have such a headband, then the headband’s area of contact should be as large as possible, so that the foam rubber doesn’t get out of shape.

Secondly, the earpads. These shouldn’t get jammed and deformed, that is, they shouldn’t be pressed against the stand any more than necessary. And ideally, the earpads shouldn’t even touch the stand at all.

Third, the stand with the headphones on it must be stable: it must have a large base area, as well as weight that exceeds the headphones’.

Fourth, all headphones have different sizes (wow). That being said, the stand height must be adjustable.

Finally, there must be a way to attach the headphones’ cable somewhere out of the way. And the last, but not least – the cover. It has nothing to do with the stand design itself, of course, but it would be nice to be able to cover the headphones while on the stand so that they just don’t get dusty.

So, here they are, the requirements for the stand.

• Wide and long headband support.
• No contact between the earpads and any parts of the stand.
• Stability.
• Adjustable height.
• Cable attachment.

• Stand length: from 15.5 to 29 cm.
• Support: 9 cm of length by 6 cm of width.
• Base element: 10.5 cm in diameter.

It’s an aluminum and wood-only design with an anti-slip rubber patch on the bottom. When changing the length of the stand, nothing gets scratched in any way, and the fixation is quite reliable.

This stand meets the requirements 1 to 4, although the base could be heavier by some 100–150 grams.

And what about the cable? For this stand, a nearby store offers the following solution:

The solution is, well, poor, because any more or less thick or long, or thick and long cable just can’t be wound on such a twig.

What about the cover? As far as I understand, there’s only one model that was once produced by Stax. It’s the STAX CPC-1 Headphone Cover one.

Well, the main question here is whether it could be designed any better? Yes, it actually can, and it’s even quite clear how exactly. It should look something like this (front view, admire my mad drawing skills):

That is, roughly said, you’ll need to make a U-shaped or triangular yoke at the bottom where you could shove the cable previously wound around your fist. Such a solution would be simple, useful, functional, but for some reason no one ever thought about it. You’d make a fortune on it! For some other reason, I won’t take this chance to become a moneybag, too.
